4Ideal if you dont want wires  Feb 01, 2006 By Fion Wood "Techie sampler"
I just set up my YSP-1000 last week. For the record it is wall mounted in an almost square room 22X25 ft. I chose this system as it seemed to give me the surround sound I wanted without running cables across floors or through walls. The set up is very easy with the included microphone and installation by myself took less than an hour.
The sound is clear and definitely gives the impression of coming from different points in the room. This may not be as clear however if the room has openings or different surfaces (mine does not). The YSP gives you the option of multiple listening methods, 5 beam to simulate 5 speakers, 3 beam for 3 etc. I have used 5 beam almost exclusively although the night feature is useful for lower volume levels. It is important to note that the 5 beam is only available if you have a square or rectangular room.
Because the speaker is focused on one point in the room, (the place where you put the microphone in the set up phase) you do get a faint echoing if you move a reasonable distance away from the center point. On a 3 seater couch I didnt notice significant difference unless I walked towards the room corners. Overall however, the appearance of one single speaker strip mounted above my tv and almost true surround sound outweighed the alternative of multiple speaker points and holes in my walls.
Best of all, if I move, it just comes off the wall and comes with me.

4Ideal for small spaces  Apr 13, 2008 By amborn
Our Media room is fairly small (12x10) and it would have been difficult setting up a complete surround sound system the way the room is shaped. The Yamaha YSP-1000 solved the issue. It looks sleek on the wall under the flat screen and the sound is impressive, (both for music and DVD) especially in combination with a decent sub-woofer. The surround effect works but cannot compare to a true quality surround system positioned correctly around you. The YSP does give the impression that sound is coming from various directions and better separates the different sound sources which helps clarify sound, voices and music of a movie.
Overall the YSP is a great product. If you have the space to position a complete surround sound system around you, you might be better off with another system though.

5Stellar Sound  Jan 13, 2012 By JEFF R JORDAN
The YSP-1000 features an amazing 42 drivers, each powered by its own channel of amplification. This produces very clean and crisp sound at a surprisingly loud volume. The integrated amplifier provides a total of 120 watts of power, with 20 watts going to each woofer and 2 watts to each of the 40 midranges. I definitely recommend adding a subwoofer via the included subwoofer output. I use the compact Velodyne MicroVee and the overall sound of the combination is extremely strong especially for such a small footprint. The YSP1000 won "Best in Show" at the CES a couple of years ago and if you are looking for a premium sound bar to compliment your flat screen, then look no further.

3OK if you know what you're getting...  Jul 07, 2006 By Eduardo Nietzsche
...i.e. "simulated surround sound" is still not, and never will be, anything like REAL surround sound with separate speakers! No matter how much it costs, how cool it looks, how inflated the pricetag or how grandiose the advertising claims.

I heard this thing at a local Tweeter a few days ago. Sure, it looks very nice, has plenty of clarity and power for TV, DVD, and casual music listening. But did it ever fool me into thinking the sound was coming at me from all directions? Ha! Not a chance. Don't fall for the marketing BS, people. Buy this thing if you want to appease your aesthetically-tyrannical spouse or simply like the sleek and compact looks.

If you know how to shop wisely (read: Internet-direct brands like Ascend, Hsu, SVS, & know how to use pricegrabber dot com) for the same price you could get an excellent set of 5 speakers, subwoofer, receiver and DVD player that would blow this out of the water.

For the record, there are speakers that do create a 3-D soundfield but they are not small nor cheap: Martin Logan electrostats, Magnepan planars, Quads, etc.
